Well here we are at the end of the 2009-2010 club year.
As I stated at the last meeting we were waiting for conformation from the 55th Signal Corp., Combat Camera at Ft. Meade. Although they were very much wanting to come and give us a presentation they found out that the XO and the the members that he was going to bring are going to be TDY out of town during this next week. So unfortunately they will not be able to give us the presentation. They are hoping that we will invite them for next year and that they will be able to fit it into their schedule.
However we do have a great photographer who will give us an enjoyable and information packed presentation. One of the most famous of our local photographers, Stan Stearns, has agreed to present to us Monday night. For those who may not know Stan he took one of the most published images in History. His image of John F. Kennedy Jr (John-John as he was known at the time) saluting his fathers casket on the caisson as it was being transported down Pennsylvania Ave in November of 1963. His many years working the White House and Washington beat and traveling with Presidents not only created many memorable images but gave him insight to the people and places that have made history. As a native of Annapolis Stan returned to his roots to build a very successful career as a portrait, wedding and commercial photographer. His images are available in galleries in places like Santa Fe, NM and Palm Beach, Fl.
Also this Meeting will highlight the presidents selection of 20 best images from this past year and the election of next years board.

Monday June 7th meeting
Well tonight's meeting looks like a good one. With all the images submitted for the challenge (cemeteries) and a bonus of a speaker with a short presentation on his work photographing cemeteries it should be fun.
We also will have a presentation from Jay Alden on his recent trip that should be both informative and entertaining. Make sure you attend and see how the members interpreted the challenge assignment.
Our last meeting is coming up in two weeks and we are waiting to hear confirmation on our final guest speaker. This promises to be the highlight of the year and you will not want to miss it. We are hoping to have final confirmation by the meeting tonight, however it may not come through that soon. If not watch the web site and both Don Dement's and my blog all this week for the announcement.

Monday May 10th Meeting
This Monday's guest speaker will be David Colburn of Colburn Images. Dave will give a presentation on commercial photography. Dave has over 25 years experience as a professional photographer. His clients have included International Paper, The Association for Hose and Accessories Distribution (NAHAD), The Yacht Brokers Association of America, Platinum Publishing and Media Two to name a few. His work has been published in Chesapeake Bay Magazine, State of Maryland Destination Guide, Maryland Magazine, City of Annapolis Magazine and various Anne Arundel County Visitors Center and Chamber of Commerce publications.
Most recently Dave was awarded by Eastman Kodak as the winner of the May 2010 Kodak Moment award. This is a world wide contest that is run each month by Eastman Kodak and his image of an Osprey can be seen on Kodak's website.
We will also get a chance to see some of the images taken on the last field trip to the Naval Academy and Matt will enlighten us with how the days events went.

Monday April 26 Meeting
This Monday's meeting should be fun to see how we all interpret the challenge "Transportation"
Our reviewer for this meeting will be Michael Sheras. Mike's photographic career began in the early 1970's. After graduating from University of Illinois College of Law Mike decided that his future would be better spent at his passion, photography. Michael has had the opportunity over the years to work with many famous photographers including Ansell Adams, Art Wolf, Nick Nichols, Sam Abell, Eddie Adams and all of the Presidential photographers since President Reagan to mention just a few. One of Mikes early jobs was as a photo editor for Petersens Photographic Magazine. His images have been published in many magazines and newspapers throughout his career.
Mike has photographed events including Presidential Inaugurations, national political conventions, summer and winter Olympics here and abroad, NASCAR events, Formula 1 events, Indy 500 and many others to numerous to list in a short bio.
Since 1985 Mike has been a Professional Market Representative with Canon USA and in this capacity has many years of teaching photography at photo workshops around the world. His experiences and knowledge will bring great insight into our challenge "Transportation".

DPCA Meeting Monday April 12th
Its amazing how time fly's and can get away from you. Well it almost felt like summer had arrived, but back to reality.
This Mondays meeting promises to be a great one. We will first hear from and be entertained by our guest (who just happens to be the first place winner of our exhibit in the Chaney Gallery). Hunter Harris is an accomplished aerial photographer and his images of the Chesapeake Bay area that will show the changes in the area over a period of years will be both inspiring and enlightening.
The second half of the evening we will go down to the second floor to the Chaney Gallery where Hunter will answer questions about his work. We will also hear from some of the other award winners who will give us insight into what inspired them to shoot their images on display. And the crowing jewel of the evening will be the awarding of the Peoples Choice Award from the exhibit. During Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts Art Fest the public got to vote for their favorite image in the show.
Plan to be there and see if the public's opinion is any different from that of our judge. For those who have not taken the time to visit this exhibit this will be a great time to see not only our clubs talents but those from outside the club who were selected to show their works. You can be your own judge and see how your opinion stacks up to our experts and the public at large.
Also keep in mind that our next challenge will be coming due soon. The challenge is Transportation. Use your imagination and see what you can come up with. Is it planes, trains and automobiles (like the movie), or something else that just takes you away!

Well it sure looks a lot like winter!! I know that most of you are probley thinking you could do with out this snow, but for someone like me who grew up on the northern part of Lake Michigan it brings back great memories of a younger life filled with snow forts, snow ball fights, skiing and sledding. It is a great time if you go out and enjoy it. Of course down here it gives us a great opportunity to photograph some beautiful scenes. So I hope that after you have dug ourselves out that you pick up the camera and at least take a walk. Explore the many opportunities to create great images, not to mention recording the near record snow fall.
We will hear later today from Don Dement on if we will have a meeting tomorrow night or postpone the scheduled itinerary for two weeks from know. Make sure you check your e-mail and the front page of our site for the updated information.

Reviewer for Holiday Events Challenge

Holiday Events Challenge-Monday Jan. 11th
Well here we are in the new year. I hope everyone had a great holiday and were able to capture in images some of the events you attended. Please make sure to get your images in for the challenge!! This should be a fun and interesting challenge and we are looking forward to seeing them at the next meeting on Monday the 11th.
I want to take this opportunity to thank the exhibit committee on their fine job in putting together the exhibit at Bella Photo Art & Framing Gallery. The images were great and the effort by the photographers who displayed their works showed. The press coverage brought many new people into Bella Photo Art & Framing Gallery as well as exposed the club to many people who did not know about us. Although the sales were not what we had hoped for, the positive reaction to the quality of work displayed was overwhelming.
I look forward to our next showing at Maryland Hall. If you have not yet submitted images to this show please consider doing so!!

November 30 Meeting
Well the first challenge is now behind us, and I must say that the quality of images shows just how much talent we have in the club. For those who did not attend the opening of the clubs juried show at Bella Photo Art & Framing Gallery in Edgewater you missed a great evening. Over 60 people attended the opening and were treated to great images and enlightening conversations. We all want to thank our juror J.D. Cantu for a fine job, as well as his insights and encouragement. If you have not yet stopped by to see your club members images please do so soon. These images would make great gifts for the holidays, and remember that 15% of the sales go to Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in support of their visual arts programs.
Our next meeting on November 30th promises to be very informative. The guest speaker is both a still photographer and videographer with many years of experience in both mediums. Tom Sullivan will be giving us a look into the new world of still digital cameras with HD video features. You will learn not only what they can do, but also what you need to be aware of as this new mix of high technology becomes even more commonplace.
Toms has worked in the zoo and conservation field for over thirty years. Tom started his professional photography career in Key Largo, Florida working in underwater photography for the Steven Frinks School of Underwater Photography. After returning to the Washington/Baltimore area he began working with the Smithsonian National Zoological Park and it was here that Tom developed his skills in the fine art of zoo photography. His images have appeared in several national underwater magazines and The National Zoos publications. In 1984 Tom was offered an opportunity to photograph, display and design the underwater graphics exhibit in the new wing of the National Aquarium in Washington.
In 1987 Tom formed his own production company, dealing mainly with zoo research and conservation. He has provided numerous video clips for the three major local television stations, as well as CBS and NBC on a national level. Tom has worked on several documentaries for PBS and has had a project accepted by National Geographic films. Tom has also been a presenter at several International Zoological and Conservation Conferences around the country on photographic and video applications in field and zoo research.
In keeping with the photographic theme of the animal kingdom, Mr Sullivan was one of the Baltimore Orioles Baseball Teams photographers for over 12 years. He continued his sports photography as photographer for the Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards/Bullets and the Baltimore Ravens. He also has done commercial work for numerous national corporations.
His expertise brings great insight into this new mix of still and video imagery in the world of digital products.
We will also be having a panel of members discussing "Whats in the Bag". A look at what some of us feel are important things to have in your gadget bag when going on a photographic outing.
Don't miss this great evening of insight and learning.

Nov. 13th Exhibit and Nov. 16th Meeting
Well here we are ready to have our first exhibit of the year and our first challenge. We now have almost all of the images here at Bella Photo Art & Framing Gallery and are getting ready to hang the show. The images in this show will let the Annapolis area know that we have some very good photo artist in the region, and the club can be proud that they are members. Make sure you plan on attending the opening on Friday night the 13th from 6 until 9PM. Get a chance to meet and speak to our jurist J.D. Cantu. Food and beverages will be served so come hungry and thirsty.
Monday nights meeting will be the action challenge and we have a reviewer lined up that will bring a professionals view to the art of action photography. Leslie Billman's work in sports photography has earned her a position with a wire service specializing in Tennis photography. Her work has been used by the USGA in their magazine. She also enjoys shooting candid portraits of children and pets and she has developed a large collection of micro-photography from the world of nature. Her works have been published nationally and locally her work has been displayed at the Cheasapeake Photo Gallery here in Annapolis. November 2 Meeting
Here we are already into the fall season with many great opportunities for colorful images. Make sure to get out and enjoy the sights and sounds of this active season.
At our next meeting we will have another showcase. Although the site listed this showcase as (Places I Remember), we have stated that showcases are open to all subjects. This remains so for this showcase as well.
We will also have a review of the shelter tip by Matt Korbelak.
We are also going to have a timely tech talk on fast vs slow shutter speeds in action photography by Dan Tasikas. With our upcoming challenge (Action Photography) set for the meeting on November 16 this will be a great help in selecting how you want to capture those images.

October 5th Digital Photography Club of Annapolis Meeting
The first meeting is now past and although I was not able to attend, by all accounts it was a hit! Many good images from many members as well as a very informative presentation from Colby Munger. Keep up the good work and participation.
The October 5th meeting of the Digital Photography Club of Annapolis will be both informative and entertaining. Our guest speaker is Barbara Ellison who will give a presentation on creative imaging and printing. I have had the pleasure of knowing Barbara for almost 20 years, both professionally and personally.
Barbara has had the fortune of being able to combine four of her favorite pastimes into her imaging career-photography, art, gardening and travel. Barbara has photographed events ranging from politics including National Conventions and Presidential Inaugurations, to sporting events like the Atlanta Olympics, Kentucky Derby and NASCAR. When her husband Michael opened an orchid nursery she found that she was drawn to those unusual orchids and was able to spend time exploring different ways to present them.
Barbary has taught photography workshops at Palm Beach Photographic Center, Horizon Photo Workshops, Woodstock Photo Workshops, Blue Ridge Photo Workshops and Bella Photo Art & Framing Gallery. She is also one of the highlighted instructors annually at Photofusion held in Delray Beach, FL.
Her work is published in the books "Digital Photo Art" by Thereas Airey and books by Patrick Rice titled "Professional Techniques for Black and White Digital Photography" and "Digital Infrared Photography". Her pastels enhanced orchids were featured in an article in the "August 2005 edition of the online magazine "Digitaljouranlist.org". She has shown in galleries in Florida, Ohio and Maryland.
Barbara currently resides with her husband, dogs and cat in Goldvein, Virginia.
We will also get updates on field trips, upcoming exhibits, challenges and a web walk.

Upcoming DPCA Season
September is soon approaching and another exciting season of photography lies ahead. For those of you who do not know me yet let me take this first posting to give you a little of my background.
I got my photography start when I purchased a Yashica 35GMAT while in the Air Force and stationed in Guam in the early 70's. Since that time it has not only become a passion, but also my livelihood. Like many who decided on a career around photography I joined a camera club in Tucson, Arizona where I was stationed with the Air Force. The insights I got from that camera club and seminars that I attended led me to stay with photography as a career when I left the Air Force in 1975.
Returning to Michigan and moving to Ann Arbor (home of the UofM) I got a job working for a Camera retail chain out of Detroit. This supported my "habit" and allowed me to earn a steady income while pursuing my education in the art of professional photography. After years of both working in photo retail and shooting weddings, environmental portraits and other assorted assignments I decided that the sales end of photo equipment was what I enjoyed the most.
After moving to the Albany, Troy, Schenectady area of upstate NY where my wife took a teaching job, and working as a store manager and buyer for a multi-store chain, I struck out on my own as an independent photo sales representative. I spent the next few years representing companies like Kiron, Brandess/Kalt, Cardcraft, Fujinon binoculars, Jobo Phototechnix and Minox. In 1984 I went to work for Canon USA as a sales representative to the retail photo market in upstate NY and Vermont. In 1993 I transferred to Canon USA's Government Marketing Division where my new responsibilities were for the sales of photographic, video and visual communication products to the Federal, State and Local government agencies nation wide.
In 2005 I retired from Canon USA and in 2006 I opened up Bella Photo Art & Framing Gallery here in Edgewater, MD.
I look forward to this years DPCA season and hope to help in bringing interesting programs, speakers and photographers to our meetings so that we can all learn and enjoy.

The insights I got from that camera club and seminars that I attended led me to stay with photography as a career when I left the Air Force in 1975.
Returning to Michigan and moving to Ann Arbor (home of the UofM) I got a job working for a Camera retail chain out of Detroit. This supported my "habit" and allowed me to earn a steady income while pursuing my education in the art of professional photography. After years of both working in photo retail and shooting weddings, environmental portraits and other assorted assignments I decided that the sales end of photo equipment was what I enjoyed the most.
After moving to the Albany, Troy, Schenectady area of upstate NY where my wife took a teaching job, and working as a store manager and buyer for a multi-store chain, I struck out on my own as an independent photo sales representative. I spent the next few years representing companies like Kiron, Brandess/Kalt, Cardcraft, Fujinon binoculars, Jobo Phototechnix and Minox. In 1984 I went to work for Canon USA as a sales representative to the retail photo market in upstate NY and Vermont. In 1993 I transferred to Canon USA's Government Marketing Division where my new responsibilities were for the sales of photographic, video and visual communication products to the Federal, State and Local government agencies nation wide.
In 2005 I retired from Canon USA and in 2006 I opened up Bella Photo Art & Framing Gallery here in Edgewater, MD.
I look forward to this years DPCA season and hope to help in bringing interesting programs, speakers and photographers to our meetings so that we can all learn and enjoy.
